Tutorial: Fourteen-Point Star
Friday, March 5, 2010 at 8:23AM
I have been meaning to offer this tutorial for *quite* some time now (since September of '09! Eep!) and I have finally gotten around to making the images into a tutorial. These stars are awesome. They are the perfect size for any kind of ornament, they make excellent over-sized brooches for your purse, and a great addition to any bulletin board. I make mine from 2" square paper. These ones in the image are made from scrapbooking paper. I like scrapbooking paper because it is thicker than traditional origami paper and yet the pieces still fit together nicely. However, I have made these stars from chiyogami, foil, construction paper, tissue paper, and even chewing gum wrappers. The pieces require a minimal amount of folding so you can be pretty versatile with your material. Read below for instructions!

How neat-o! This looks like a sun!
Hi Olivia — Thanks for your comment! I certainly *does* look like a little sun! I think it would be a fun project to make a big yellow 14-pointed star and then make little baby stars and planets to hang from the ceiling of a kid’s room! How fun would that be — you could even paint them with glow-in-the-dark paint.
Hi there. When I was a kid I had something like that... I can`t remember what it exactly was, but the shape of it was very similar to your star`s shape. Some toy probably, maybe some ornament that was hanging on the Christmas tree. Now I`ll be thinking about it, trying to recall. Gosh. ;-) I`ve never had patience to origami, so I admire you twice for making such lovely paper designs. Greetings. :-)
Fabulous tutorial! I hope to try this (though I doubt it will look as good as yours)!

Hi catn1p! Thanks so much for stopping by! I think the shape really is similar to some x-mas ornaments (and these look awesome on the tree -- especially if folded from foil!) -- It also makes a nice sun catcher if made from tissue!

Haha I think you would really be surprised! I think the great thing about modular origami is that since it is made from small, uncomplicated pieces, the skill is really in the assembly and not the folding. I made my boyfriend fold some and if he can do it, anyone can!

If you do try, let me know and I'll post the photos!
